Legends...

Hij is gewassen en gestreken en ik ben er best trots op: de Legends-quilt is klaar. Het begon met een charmpack en afgelopen week heb ik de laatste steekjes gemaakt. Daarmee is dit de eerste AFFO van dit jaar. Hij heeft al een plekje aan de muur gekregen, achter de mand met quilts en Thijs heeft zich er lekker bovenop genesteld.

Mijn quilt heeft warme herfst-/winterkleuren, maar eigenlijk is dit ook een heel geschikt patroon voor zomerkleuren. Benieuwd hoe dat eruit zou zien!

Ik kreeg al veel e-mails over het patroon en vanaf vandaag is dit te bestellen in mijn webwinkel. Het patroon bevat een duidelijke beschrijving en de mallen, zodat je niet zelf moet gaan meten. En omdat ik zoveel leuke reacties kreeg op het quiltpatroon (het blaadje) heb ik dit er voor jullie ook bijgetekend.

Velen staan al te popelen om met het nieuwe blok van de Country Calendar BOM aan de slag te gaan. Nog één nachtje geduld, want het patroon van februari zal vanaf morgen te downloaden zijn.

The quilt has been washed and ironed and I am proud of it: the Legends quilt is finished! It started with a charm pack and last week I made the last stitches. That makes this the first AFFO* of this year. The quilt is hanging on the wall already, behind a basket with quilts and with Thijs sleeping on top of it.

My quilt is made of warm autumn/winter colours, but in fact this pattern is appropriate for bright summer colours too. Curious what that would look like!

I have received many e-mails about the pattern and off today the pattern can be ordered in my web shop. The pattern contains clear instructions and templates so you do not have to measure. And because I got so many nice reactions on my quilt template (the leave) I have drawn that on the pattern as well.

Many of you are are itching to get down to work on the new block of the Country Calendar BOM. You have to wait just one more night: the February pattern can be downloaded of tomorrow.

*AFFO: 'af' is the Dutch word for 'finished'. Because in Dutch there's only little difference in pronounciation, we call a finished quilt an AFFO, like we use the word UFO for an unfinished quilt.

De rand...

Kennen jullie dit handige quilthulpje? De Hera Marker werkt eigenlijk hetzelfde als een blauwe stift, alleen teken je niet op de stof maar 'kras' je de quiltlijn erin. Ik gebruik hem om de rechte lijnen in de randen van de Legends te maken.

Als de laatste 3 randen zijn doorgequilt en de afwerkbies eraan zit, moet de quilt in de wasmachine om de blauwe stift eruit te wassen. Ik zie dit altijd angstig tegemoet, want je weet natuurlijk nooit of er een stof toch nog afgeeft. Voor de zekerheid maar veel kleur-absorptie doekjes erbij!

Are you familiar with this useful quilt tool? The Hera Marker gives the same result as a blue marking pen, but with the Marker you 'scratch' the quilt pattern onto the fabric. I use the Marker to scratch straight lines onto the borders of the Legends quilt.

When the last 3 borders are quilted, I have to wash the quilt in the washing machine to wash out the blue markings in the centre. I always anxious doing this, because you will never know if one of the fabrics might still bleed. To be sure I will add a lot of special absorbtion cloths!

Nog tegoed...

Deze foto liet ik al eerder (<- klik) zien. Het was de bedoeling dat ik jullie het quiltwerk in de Legends liet zien, maar 'het Beest' vond dat het tijd was dat ik weer eens iets over hem schreef. Dus jullie hebben de foto's van mijn quiltwerk tegoed.

Het middenblok quilt ik met rood garen door, voor de rand ligt er een klos lichtbruin te wachten. De mal voor het doorquilten maakte ik van paternoplaat en baseerde ik op een motiefje uit de stof: een (herfst)blad. De mallen zijn met een blauwe stift, en in geval van te donkere stoffen met een wit potlood, op de stof overgenomen. En dan kan het doorquilten beginnen. Mijn linker wijsvinger moest er weer even aan wennen, steeds dat geprik van die naald in mijn vel, maar intussen zit er een stevig eeltlaagje op. Dat is iets waaraan je elke (hand)quiltster kan herkennen!

De foto's zijn van de voor- en achterkant van de quilt. Op de voorkant zal het quiltwerk wat minder goed te zien zijn vanwege de drukke stoffen, maar op de achterkant van de quilt komt het zeker tot zijn recht.

I showed the first picture earlier (<- click) this week. I had the intention to show you the quilting in Legends, but 'the Beast' thought it was time that I wrote something about him. So I owe you these pictures.

I'm quilting the centre with red quilting thread, the borders will be done with light brown. I made the quilting template of template plastic and I based it on a design on one of the fabrics: an (autumn) leave. The templates are drawn on the fabric with a water errasable pen on the light fabrics and with a white pencil on the dark fabrics. Than the quilting can begin. My left index finger had to get used to the needle again, all that sticking in, but the skin has hardened there, a mark that reveals all quilters!

The pictures are of the front and back of the quilt. On the front side the quilting does not show very good because of the printed fabrics, but it shows very good on the back side of the quilt.

Quilthulp...

Hier zit ik 's avonds aan mijn Legends quilt te werken. De televisie staat aan en ondertussen doe ik een paar steekjes. Het middendeel quilt ik met rood garen door. Bij het quilten krijg ik hulp van Thijs. En als hij moe is van het helpen, dan doet hij zijn dutje gewoon onder de quilt-in-de-ring.

Vervelend natuurlijk als ik die quilt nodig heb om de quiltlijnen erop te tekenen. Maar geen nood, de ring alleen volstaat ook! ;o)

This is the place where I am working on my Legends quilt. The television is on and I make some quilt stitches in the meanwhile. I'm quilting the centre block with red thread. While I am quilting I get some help of Thijs. And when he is to tired to help, he does his nap right under the quilt-in-the-ring.

Annoying of course when I need the quilt to draw lines on it, BUT... no worries, the ring will do just fine! ;o)

Ontspannen? Nee, opspannen...

Dit is wat we nodig hebben: een rol schilderstape, een klos quiltgaren, een schaar, een kromme naald en een vingerhoed.

En dan kan ik aan de slag met een van mijn minst favoriete werkjes: opspannen. Hoewel ik ontzettend graag quilt, vind ik dit echt niet ontspannend! Maar gelukkig is de klus na 1,5 uur geklaard. Nu nog een mooie kleur quiltgaren uitzoeken...

This is what we need: tape, a bobbin, siccors, a half round needle and a thimble.

Then I can start with my least favourite activity: layering the quilt. I love quilting, but layering is not exactly relaxing. But fortunately the job is done after 1,5 hours. Now I have to look for some beautiful matching quilt thread...

"Legends"...

Vele driehoekjes zijn getekend, geknipt en aan elkaar genaaid. Eerst tot blokjes, dan tot stroken. En nu de stroken allemaal aan elkaar zitten vormen ze samen een groot middenblok.

Ik vind het makkelijker om de blokken ongestreken te verwerken, zeker wanneer er veel naden bij elkaar komen. Maar nu mocht dan eindelijk het strijkijzer erop. Gladgestreken geeft het toch een veel mooier effect! Straks (lekker binnen met de verwarming aan, want oh, wat is het koud buiten!) kan ik de banen langs het blok gaan zetten.

Wat gaan jullie doen vandaag?

Many triangles are drawn, cut and stitched. First I made blocks and, after that, strips. Now the strips are stitched together the make a big centre block. 

I prefer to work with unironed blocks, especially when there are many seam allowances. But after I had finished the centre I had ironed it. It looks more beautiful now! Later (inside with the heating on, because it is so cold outside!) I will add the borders to the centre.
